even more fun with stencils!

hi again! today is the LAST DAY of the Summer show here in Sunny and CRAZY Las Vegas! i will admit that my feet are sore, and i guess i am tired, because when i get this tired, i get a little bit emotional! always happens at shows- i am always reminded WHY i love this hobby, why i am a scrapbooker as i visit with others who share my same passion for it. you all probably know that i am a crier! but it’s seriously been such a joy for me to re-connect and visit with so many of the people in this industry that i consider my dear friends! i am so thankful! it’s always so much work, but always so exciting as well! …

today i was able to share some of my favorite stenciling techniques…but i never tried some of these layering ideas that Maggie shares today!! THESE art journaling pages as beautiful!

If you’ve never used stencils in your projects, then you do NOT know what you’re missing!

How do I know?

Because that was me…completely. I would see projects that included stencil-work and I would just think – “wow, that’s cool…looks like way too much work” – and I wouldn’t think of it again. That is, until I was challenged to actually use them.

You guys…they’re AWESOME! And the creative possibilities are endless!

After watching Heidi’s new Stencil Magic class videos…(and practicing, practicing, practicing)…I created these pages in my art journal…

Here are all of the supplies I used for these pages…

*6×6 Lattice Stencil

*6×6 Polka Dot Stencil

*6×6 Honeycomb Stencil

*12×12 Hexagon Stencil

*12×12 Circle Lattice Stencil

*12×12 Sunshine Stencil

*Color Shine Mustard

*Color Shine Sweet Cherry

*Color Shine Primrose

*Clear Pop Alphabet Mint

*Pink Paislee Luxe Star Rubons

Gesso, White Acrylic Paint, Mod Podge, Mod Podge Dimensional Magic, watercolor paints, alcohol ink, Stickles, Staz-On Ink in Dove Grey, various sequins

To start, I prepped my art journal pages with Gesso. And then I just started playing…

I knew the basic colors I wanted to use – yellow, pink & gold – so I created a yellow (ochre, actually) ombre effect across my pages with watercolor paint. After that everything just sort of fell into place…

I just started grabbing different stencils and different media and trying anything I thought may look cool. Heidi demonstrates a whole mess of amazing techniques in this class…and the best part? You can’t do anything wrong! Yay! If something doesn’t look right, no worries! Paint over it and start again! You need more of one color and less of another? Add another layer! Love love love…

In some of these close-ups you can see some of the different layers I’ve added in this piece…I love that you can just catch a glimpse of different stencils, colors, ideas. I feel it really adds depth to the project…

To be honest…I’m not even sure EXACTLY how I created some of the looks…I really just used Heidi’s techniques, played around, and stopped when I liked what I saw. And I had so much fun with this project…

AND that’s not it…I wanted to share one more thing with you…see my letters there? Well, they started out as the Clear Pop Mint Alphas! I know! Can you believe it??? Here’s how I changed them up…

Maggie Massey for Heidi Swapp

I painted each letter with a few layers of white acrylic paint (making sure one layer was dry before adding another)…then I used my Color Shine (Primrose & Mustard) to create the ombre effect on the letters. After everything was dry I added some Mod Podge Dimensional Magic to each letter…if you look closely you can see that alphas are kinda shiny and puffy???…and there you have it! I adore this look! And I think they look so cool over the layers on the pages…

Now, I challenge you to play around with some stencils and spray & paint and whatever…just play! I bet you’d be surprised at what you can create by just making a mess…(smile).
