When I was younger, my mom, sisters, carried our planners everywhere. We called our planner “Our Life” because there was no way we could lose our planner with all thing things written down in it. That would be catastrophic! As an adult I started to use my smart phone for scheduling. Getting organized is suppose to free your mind and give you more peace, but using my phone wasn’t so I decided to get back to my roots with a planner.
In the last few years I have been keeping several planners – each to do a different job – and I realized I was complicating things. Getting organized doesn’t have to be difficult and you don’t need 10 planners to do it! If you are trying to simplify your life and don’t know where to start, the Heidi Swapp Color Fresh Journal Boxed Kit in Pink Glitter is a perfect starting point. Here are 5 ways you can stay organized using a journal style planner.
Decide what you need a planner for.
I realized that I needed 1 planner to do 4 jobs. I needed to stay on track with an “all events monthly calendar.” Do you remember those small year calendars that you could pop in your purse? They were perfect to pull out of your bag at the doctor’s office when making an appointment. One of the inserts in this boxed kit is a month at a glance insert. This is perfect to get all the events of the month in one place!
I also needed a place to do my week’s to-do list for work and home. Another insert in the kit is a weekly spread which is perfect!
The other insert I needed was simple – A place to take notes. The last insert booklet is blank just for writing and journaling.
Make it beautiful.
The truth is if our planners are not an extension of our self, we are not going to want to use them. The pink glitter was screaming “flamingo” and so I decorated the entire planner in different flamingo embellishments. (See supply list below for more details)
Use tools you love to get the job done.
Whatever inspires you to stay organized use it! For me it is a good pen and washi tape! I love to block off areas with washi and stickers. I also love that this new Heidi Swapp multi-color pen has all the colors I need in 1!
Cute paper clips and a stapler is also handy to have!
Take time weekly to pre-plan.
What I have realized is to create peace and room in your schedule is to pre-plan. Take time before the week starts, whether it is on Saturday or Sunday, to sit and look at your week to come. Then ask yourself these questions.
Decide what is priority.
Write those things down.
What will you need to do to accomplish those tasks?
Create a realistic list in your week at a glance page so you can accomplish those tasks.
Maybe it is keeping your home clean. If you just write “clean the house” the job can seem too overwhelming when the day comes to get it done. However, if you break the job up into several little jobs through out the week in a list – it frees yourself the burden of doing the entire job at once. It then helps motivate you as you check off the list as you complete it.
Book mark it.
When you use a book mark in a book you are reading it usually means you will be picking it back up and using it right where you left off. The same applies to a planner. If you close the planner and put it on a shelf, you most likely will not use it daily. So, keep your planner out and with you. Book mark your pages so you can flip right to where you need to be quickly. Just like your favorite novel, you will want to take this planner with you everywhere to use on the go.

I hope you are inspired to get organized with a planner and that you will enjoy this Color Fresh journal as much as I have!
