Halloween in Lights Decor | Luminarias

I remember years and years (and years…ugh) ago trick-or-treating with my parents & brother and seeing luminarias for the very first time.

I thought those lit-up bags lining driveways and fences were just about the coolest thing EVER…and since then I’ve always wanted to add them to my holiday decor.

Trouble was, I never really understood how they got candles to burn inside the bags without burning the bags! Well, now, thanks to the invention of battery-operated candles, I don’t have to worry about that…

And thanks to Heidi’s creative genius, I can get a kit (at my local Michaels!) that includes every single thing I need to create darling luminarias of my own…

Here’s everything that comes in the Halloween In Lights Luminaria package…8 white paper bags with 4 different spooky images printed on them (if you look reeeeeeaaaaally close, you can see the black cat on the top bag) & 8 little battery-operated votive candles.

Now, in order to get the image to appear through your paper bag, you will need to do one of 2 things: poke tiny little holes when shown on each bag using a paper piercer (mine is from American Crafts) or needle OR cut out the dotted parts of the image from each bag.

I chose to poke the holes because I LOVE the way it makes the image look when lit up.

Here’s how I did it:

*Inside your Luminaria package you will find a little (roughly) 5″ x 5″ x 1/2″ piece of styrofoam. Tuck that styrofoam right into your folded bag behind the image, and, with a paper piercer or needle, simply poke your holes right over the printed dots. When you’re finished, just remove the styrofoam and slip it into your next bag.

Easy peasy…BUT, it does take a while to finish all 8 bags. And by “while” I mean forever. So if you choose to go this route, grab yourself a drink and some Netflix and settle in…

Doesn’t this little guy just look so good with all of those pierced holes?

And here are the luminarias all set up on our front walk…

TIP: if the little votive candles aren’t enough to keep your bags from tipping over, simply add a landscaping rock or two to provide more stability.
