Hawthorne | DIY Travelers Notebook
Travelers Notebooks are such a popular trend in memory keeping right now.
And I have to admit – I’m hooked.
I love the small format. I love the portability. And I love the opportunity to make each notebook completely unique.
Recently, I used my very favorite pieces from Heidi’s Hawthorne collection to create a DIY Travelers Notebook to hold some very special photos.
Here’s how I created my notebook:
The standard TN size is roughly 4.25″ wide x 8.25″ high, so I cut some of my favorite Hawthorne papers down to 8.5″ wide x 8.25″ high – making sure to pay attention to pattern direction so that my folded pages looked the way I wanted them to.
I used my favorite paper – 9th & 9th – as my notebook’s cover. The LOVE panel is just about the perfect size to cover the whole front of my book!
I continued to size & cut the papers I loved until I had enough to fill my book. I used 2 double-sided papers & 6 single-sided papers (from the paper pack – sewn together to create what acts as a single page) in my book, but you can use as many (or as few) as you’d like! Just remember that the more pages you add to your book, the more likely you are to have to add a bit of width to your outer pages (or the more likely you’ll be to have to trim down the width of your inner pages) to keep your pages even after they’ve been folded.
I folded each page down the middle, stacked each folded page one on top of another, and used a long-reach stapler to bind them together.
Then I got to decorating!
Before I show you the inside of my notebook, I want to explain what I’m using this book for.
My daughter, Kinsley, is obsessed with makeup and with making herself up. She loves studying beauty trends & styles throughout the decades and I often find her sitting at her vanity practicing different looks. I LOVE seeing what she’s able to accomplish and I’m blown away by her talent.
She takes selfies of each of her “projects” and posts them to her IG…and, it’s these selfies that I’m adding to this “lookbook” of sorts.
One more note – I want the photos to be the focus of this project, and, because each page design is already beautiful on its own, I kept the embellishments to a minimum.
OK…let’s take a look inside…
I added a single strip of Hawthorne washi tape to my inside front cover…just to make the edge a little more defined.
A little piece of kraft ephemera, a woodgrain sticker & an embroidered patch, along with some stamping are all I added to this page.
I LOVE the white stamp ink on the woodgrain…ack!
And the line of stitching adhering 2 pieces of single-sided paper give the page some added texture.
My next pages are dressed up with just a few more pieces of ephemera…
…and a Word Jumble sticker.
The pink polka dots from the Eden paper are all the design this page needs to contrast with the rich dark brown of the opposite side.
Again, that white stamp ink – love it.
This little embellishment cluster is made with pieces of ephemera, a few stamps & a woodgrain sticker (the colon, turned on its side).
The big, beautiful floral design in this center spread is just beautiful all on its own…
…but I had to add just a little more stamping.
For this spread, I added the “love” stickers across the fold to help unite the two pages.
And a single piece of washi tape across the top edge of my photo gives the spread a casual, pinboard-like feel.
This foam sticker – “real” – adds some texture and a bit of shine to this page.
I added that beautiful silver to this word by cutting a small piece of Minc foil and simply pressing it over the top of the word’s adhesive top.
I did add a bit of journaling to this page…
…in one of my favorite ways to add journaling…a little circle highlighted with colored pencil.
And finally, the last page in my book.
This page contains a bit more stamping & a lovely cardstock sticker, tucked behind my photo.
You can see that there is still a ton of usable space available in this lookbook…but not for long.
I’m already in the process of adding more photos.
And when this one is full, I’ll just whip up another one.
Thanks so so much for stopping by to see my DIY Travelers Notebook.
