How I Am Organizing and Resetting My Creative Space

Getting reorganized and reset for the New Year

Getting Organized and Studio Tour by Jamie Pate

Welcome to my studio where I have been busy resetting and reorganizing this space for all the making this new year. Right here is where I spend a good chunk of my time. For one thing, it’s where all the creating happens. Secondly, it’s the first room in my home. We converted our front room to be this space several years ago. Recently the floors were re-done. It’s been a work in progress through the years. But I am very thankful for how it is turning out.  Today I will show you the front half of this room and a bit of insight as to what I hide, I mean, organize, in what I affectionately call, The Studio.

This dresser is home to my main work surface. It holds on top some of my most reached for items. Inside is found  tools and die cuts and paper and stamps and washi tape and…I could go on. But that’s for another post. Let’s go from left to right and take you on a tour of what is found here.

First, I hold my most used stamp inks in a stamp tower. I recently added the storage container that holds 3×4 and 6×4 cards. I’m not big on keeping items out, but when they can be held in good looking as well as functional storage basics, well then I’m all for it. Next to those cards is a 4-drawer organizer. This now holds ephemera. It’s great to have those embellishments in the wide drawers. Makes it so easy to grab what I need and make.

The striped jar holds my Minc Scissors, plus a pair of WRMK scissors that I am always reaching for. If you peek in the pen plate you will find Kelly Creates on the ready for my journaling and planner. Another black and white striped container holds my Memory Planner Scissors plus Heidi Swapp Stencils. Included there are also Memory Planner Rulers. And of course, there is always a MemoryDex Spinner near by. Right now the Blush Spinner is holding my current DIY MemoryDex Cards.

I recently came across this wide rolling cart. The top shelf holds Heidi Swapp Collection 6×6 papers in a paper stacker. Next to that holder I have a Storyline Chapters Binder plus Memory Planner Inserts. I’ve been working on my planner so I like to keep it easily accessible.

The next shelf holds stamps I am currently reaching for. The black box holds bottles of Color Shine, do you remember those? Next to that I have a tabbed holder that I like to place my Definition and Alpha Stickers in. All those from Old School and Art Walk and Memory Planner collections fit in there nicely.

The bottom shelf holds my die cutting machine. Then I have a plastic container that holds stickers and die cuts that I am not using quite as much at the moment.

I have a bit of an obsession to these rolling carts. I still have another one by my desk for more office and home management items. This cart holds more of the items I like to have on the ready. While resetting this space, I needed to think through, ‘what am I actually using right now’. Those items I decided needed to be easily reached for. These rolling carts come in handy to hold all the things.

Directly across from the dresser and extra work table are these bookshelves. I have had these for a very long time and work them hard. The boxes hold all of my current Heidi Swapp Paper Collections. Each box is labeled by it’s collection name. The boxes hold stickers and extra ephemera for those collections plus my paper scraps. This is one of the best ways I have found to keep these paper collections culled and under control.

Included on these shelves are crates that hold mini albums that I made this past year. There is a shelf for additional Storyline Chapters albums. I keep several of my WRMK Punch Boards on one of the shelves too. Just super easy to grab one of those boards and get to creating. Another WRMK item is several of the paper trays. These hold double sided pattern papers. Each shelf holds it’s own collection, plus the bottom shelf holds white and vanilla cardstock.

This shelving unit has to be organized often. I find that I need to go through boxes and rotate old products for new products. I often need to consider what I am no longer using and make decisions as to what needs to go into more long term storage, or if I am ready to donate items. It’s helpful to these spaces if we take time often to remove the old so I can make space to enjoy the new.

This studio tour was just an overview. There is actually a whole lot more going on under the surface. Be sure to check out my personal blog where I am touring these spaces at a deeper level and sharing more detailed organizational ideas.

In the meantime, I hope this inspires you to reset your space for the new year. Last week we announced right here brand new Heidi Swapp collections coming soon. I know I for one am so excited to get those beautiful paper lines in my hands. Now’s the time to clean up, reorganize, and make room for all the new.
