Neon Decor | One Cactus 2 Ways
Hello, hello!
Happy Friday!
Maggie here today, with a look at a fun new addition to my teenage daughter’s bedroom!
My 15-year-old loves to change up her minimalist room decor. She keeps her walls, furniture, and bedding white so that she can easily swap out pillows, tchotchkes, wall hangings & flowers with every season, or as the mood strikes her – she’s definitely her mama’s daughter.
She was looking to add a more summery vibe, and I thought the new Heidi Swapp Neon cactus would be a fun & trendy addition!
These fantastic new wooden wall words/shapes are darling as is, OR you can DIY the heck out of them to suit your tastes.
The shapes & neon light strings are sold separately so that you can choose any neon color you prefer, and each string light comes with a battery pack so you can power your sign anywhere – no need to place your decor close to an outlet!
The light string/word (or shape) assembly directions are right on the back of every package…
…and a diagram with arrows shows you just how to string your particular shape.
I decided to keep my cactus white…to more closely fit with Kinsley’s style…and to add Lemon Lime lights.
Then, to add just a pop of color, I thought I would add some little artificial flowers to my shape using a hot glue gun.
ACK! I think these look so dang adorable!
And here’s the finished product…
I cut a few strips of floral wire and wired the cactus to a metal shelf my daughter has hanging above her bed…and then I simply tucked the battery pack behind my shape…easy peasy.
OK, for real, though…this is adorable, right?
And it took no time at all!
Plus, every addition I made to my shape was temporary…so if, in the future, she wants to change out the neon color or flowers or whatever, she can without any trouble.
Sweet & simple.
Now…in the process of putting together that little cactus I decided I wanted to try another way to DIY this same shape.
This time I grabbed some of my favorite washi tape from the Fresh Start Collection.
I laid strips of washi across the design…
…and then took a craft knife and cut around the little groove where you lay your string lights.
This was surprisingly incredibly easy. I thought I was going to have a little trouble getting a clean cut, but nope!
And I think the finished products looks so crisp and cool!
Once I covered and cut around the entire shape, I added the string lights.
And oh my heck!
Doesn’t this look awesome!
Just imagine the possibilities!
With all of the different washi designs available, you could create a new look for every occasion!
I just love the versatility that comes with these new DIY Neon words & shapes – paint them, washi them, add embellishments to them – the list goes on!
Whatever your style, this neon decor will add the perfect pop of color & on-trend design!
And all of the new shapes, words and neon string lights are available now at a select Joann store near you, so go get you some!
