Tips to Make Your Own DIY TeePee
Today I am excited to partner up with our sister brand, We R Memory Keepers, to showcase one of their new DIY TeePee kits, now available online at Target!
I had the best time making this sweet spot in my daughter’s new “big girl” room. She was so surprised when she got to see it set up for the first time this week and she hasn’t stopped playing in her new favorite space since!
I live in a rental home where the walls need to stay white. To make up for it, I like to add as much color as I can to our play areas! The DIY TeePee Kit includes all the supplies to create a child’s teepee. I wanted to take it a few steps further to see how much fun they are to customize, no matter what your child’s room decor is!
Here are my tips:
1. Use Heidi Swapp Stencils and Texture Paste to add a border along the edge of the teepee.
This took me a few days as I like to craft at night when the kids are asleep. I just laid the skirt on my work space and stenciled with texture paste the large 8.25×10.25 Gallery Wall Stencil, available at Michael’s Stores. This is a great video to see how to use texture paste by Heidi. I just made sure I taped around the stencil really good so it didn’t get in areas I didn’t want it to. Then, I made sure to let it dry all the way before laying the stencil over top of the pattern to continue the design.
You could use art screens & art screen ink or even Color Shine & the stencils but I wanted to make sure I could spot clean the teepee and texture paste is really good at wiping clean when dirty!
2. Paint the poles with a touch of gold.
I just used washi tape to tape off the tips of the poles to add some extra gold accents to the room!
3. Add more flags & banners then customize them with Color Shine.
To add color to the Heidi Swapp Muslin Flags and Banners, available at Michael’s Stores, I used stencils and sprayed them with Color Shine.
Just lay the stencil down over top of the banner, spray lightly, and dry. This color is Hot Pink.
This color is Salmon.
4. Add a touch of gold to the kit.
The kit comes with the feather and beads but to make it all match the decor of the room, I added some gold to the feather with gold paint. With the same paint, I painted the already purple bead gold.
5. Add lights.
To make this teepee magical I needed to add lights! To the top I strung Heidi Swapp’s Copper Wire Light Strand. Although, a plain Marquee Love light strand will work too! The battery pack is easy to hide in the back in between the poles.
For the inside, I went ahead and gathered the Celebration In Lights Star Light Strand and created a loop at the top. I used a twisty tie to hold the loop in place. Then I used another twisty tie to slip through the loop and hang from the inside grommet of the teepee. The battery pack hangs up and out of the way and I can switch it on and off easily. There is nothing like laying inside looking up at the stars!
6. Add pillows, throws, and miniature rugs for colorful comfort!
Nothing makes a space more inviting than soft blankets and pillows. For the inside of the teepee, I used a couple comfy bathmats. They are small enough for inside the teepee and for little bodies! Make sure there is a soft throw inside as well because I guarantee you will want to crawl in and take little naps during the day.
